Healthcare Heroes

We would like to give a HUGE thank you to Middlesex Health and the Middlesex County NAACP for providing us with an absolutely incredible event. We spent the morning celebrating healthcare heroes of color. Each child got to pick out a book about healthcare heroes that involved main characters of color. Then, a doctor from Middlesex read a book in both English and Spanish. Afterwards, the kids got dressed in masks, hair nets, and gloves and performed “surgery” on play doh. The kids left feeling inspired to join the healthcare field. It was a fantastic program and we would be delighted to invite them back again soon.

Bird Watching Event

WYFS and friends had a great time bird watching at Hammonasset. We saw 19 different types of birds! We watched thousands (maybe millions) of swallows flying together. Thank you to our Bird Experts!
List of Birds We Saw: Bald Eagle, Osprey, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Canadian Geese, Tree Swallows, Song Sparrows, Little Blue Heron, Phoebe, Yellow Chat, Yellow Warbler, Palm Warbler, Common Yellow Throat, Harrier Hawk, Cormorant Double Crested, Great Cormorant, Great Yellow Legs, Herring Gull, and more.

Rylee Finds a Family Author Event:

Jillian Lee, the author of Rylee Finds a Family, entertained us all with a book reading, signing, and arts and crafts. Did you know that Jillian went to Daisy Ingraham School in Westbrook and had Mrs. Salisbury as a teacher?

Gardening Group:

The weather was perfect for gardening around Westbrook Youth and Family Services. We had a great group of toddlers who were a big help with digging and spreading dirt. We also had fun painting kindness rocks. After working up a big appetite, Pastor Jeanette and the Congregational Church treated us to pizza.

Medical Professionals and Mental Health Support:

Are you fur-real!? You’ve got to be kitten me!? These two adorable cats logged onto our mental health support group for medical professionals. We hope they learned a lot and loved every meow-ment of the presentation!

Scavenger Challenge Submissions:

Challenge: Make a fort out of something other than pillows, blankets, and cushions.

This Cousin Crew made a fort using giant magnetic tiles. Thanks for the submission, Alisha!

Here is Karen’s take on building a fort out of something other than pillows, blankets, and cushions.

A requirement for submissions to our Scavenger Challenge is that the pictures were taken this month. Although the submitter said these weren’t taken this month, they were too beautiful not to post. Here are photos of a sunrise and a sunset taken in the same day.

Hiking Group:

We had a great time walking the Stewart McKinney Wildlife Preserve on Old Clinton Road. We explore a new trail in Westbrook every Wednesday at 10:30am. Our website has weekly locations here.

The following week, we explored Chapman Mill Pond on Horse Hill Road. We saw two swans making a nest on the water.

Although it was a little drizzly, we had fun searching for the budding signs of Spring on the Horse Hill Woods South Trail.

It was April Break so we had some surprise guests from students and teachers. We admired the stonewalls on Horsehill Woods North while picking up trash.

This week, we were pleasantly surprised by all the trails the Town Forest had to offer from the Fairview Entrance.

Exploring the plethora of trails the Preserve has to offer tired out our friend! We continued looking for Jack-in-the-Pulpits but no luck (yet!) We saw a fallen tree with interesting markings on it. Does anyone know what kind of creature made these tracks?

We didn’t see any turtles, but our walk through Turtle Creek made us feel like we were on vacation!

We went back to Chapman Mill Pond to check on the swans and saw they had babies!

We went back to Turtle Creek with trash bags and filled them with litter. Because of the smoke from the Canadian fires, the sky looked hazy.

Stroller Group:

Check out WYFS’ two youngest fans! One-week-old Charlotte and two-month-old Giana had a great time at our weekly Stroller Walk. Come join us Thursdays at 10:30am at Meig’s Point Hammonasset.

Three-week-old Zachary joined the girls for another great Stroller Walk.
